Bangkok Public Transport on New Year's Eve 2019/2020

There are some changes of public transport’s operational hours planned on New Year's Eve 2019/2020 in Bangkok. Free parking at the airports and exemption of some toll fees will also be offered to tourists and locals.

MRT on New Year's Eve

In order to facilitate passengers who are traveling to join celebration of the New Year festival in various locations around Bangkok, MRT metro will extend service time of MRT Blue Line, Blue Line Extension (Hua Lamphong - Lak Song station) and Purple Line from the normal midnight closing time on 31 December 2019 to 2:00 AM on 1 January 2020.

However, the extension of service hours does not cover the route of the extension MRT Blue Line from Tao Poon to Tha Phra station.

BTS on New Year's Eve

BTS Skytrain will extend service hours on Tuesday night, 31 December 2019. Normally closed at midnight, BTS will extend its service until 2:00 AM on 1 January 2020. The extension of operational hours is planned in order to facilitate the passengers who want to travel to celebrate New Year in various locations along BTS Skytrain lines in Bangkok.

In addition, BTS will increase frequency of trains for its service to be sufficient for passengers as the number of them using the service is expected to be much higher on the last day of the year.

Airport Rail Link on New Year's Eve

The operating hours of Airport Rail Link train that is running between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Phayathai station will be extended on New Year’s Eve as on the last day of the year the train will be operating from 5:30 on 31 December 2019 until 2:00 AM on 1 January 2020.

Public Bus on New Year's Eve

On the night of 31 December 2019, the frequency of Bangkok public buses will be increased and the operating time will be extended to 02:00 AM on 1 January 2020 on the routes passing Sanam Luang where Thai people participate in activities "Prayer For The New Year 2020 overnight" and the routes passing popular spots where the countdown party to New Year 2020 will be held such as Central World, ICONSIAM, Mega Bangna and Asiatique.

There will also be 2 shuttle bus routes available from 16:00 to 21:00 on 27 December 2019 and from 05:00 to 09:00 on 2 January 2020:

  • 1st Route: Mo Chit Bus Terminal - Chatuchak BTS Station
  • 2nd Route: Mo Chit Bus Terminal - Victory Monument

BKK Airport during New Year

Airports of Thailand (AOT) will provide free parking as a New Year gift at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). Free parking will be offered for 718 cars in Zone C from 8:00 on Friday 27 December 2019 until 17:00 on Thursday 2 January 2020.

There is also a free shuttle bus service provided within Suvarnabhumi Airport. Shuttle Bus Line A runs from the public transport center (Bus Terminal) to the parking lot zone C and also brings passengers to BKK Airport’s passenger terminal.

DMK Airport during New Year

Don Mueang Airport (DMK) will provide free parking for 450 cars in 3 designated areas of Don Mueang Airport between 27 December 2019 and 2 January 2020. Free parking will be available:

  1. On the 2nd floor of 5-story warehouse parking building.
  2. At car park in front of the 5-storey warehouse parking building.
  3. At car park between the 5-storey warehouse building and warehouse 2.

There are 4 free shuttle buses providing shuttle service between the parking lot and Terminal 1 / Terminal 2, every 15 minutes for 24 hours.

Car Travel during New Year

During the New Year festival, many people return to their hometowns. As a result, traffic congestion is expected on all roads that lead to/from Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. The exemption of toll fees during New Year is expected to help make traffic lighter and encourage people to travel more conveniently and quickly.

The Department of Highways (DOH) announced the exemption of toll fees for commuters using 2 motorways between 00:01 on 27 December 2019 and 24:00 on 2 January 2020. Toll fees are exempted on these routes:

  • Motorway Route 7 (Bangkok-Chonburi)
  • Motorway Route 9 (Eastern Outer Ring Road, Bang Pa-In - Bang Phli)

Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (ETA) will also exempt expressway fee for 8 days during New Year 2020. Toll fees will be exempted from 00:01 on 27 December 2019 until 24:00 on 3 January 2019 on these routes:

  • Burapha University (Bangna Expressway - Chonburi)
  • Kanchanapisek Expressway (Bangplee - Suksawat)

After the New Year holiday period, Easy Pass users will receive a 5% discount for the expressway toll for inbound to the city route that will be effective on early mornings from 04:00 to 07:00, from 6 January to 6 March 2020. Discounted fee will be available on these routes:

  • Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway at 4 checkpoints, namely Din Daeng, Bang Dao, Khanong and Bang Chak
  • Si Rat Expressway at 2 checkpoints, Prachachuen and Asoke 4
