Our Vietnam trip started in Haiphong before heading to Cat Ba the following day so we found a hotel there to rest for one night. It looks like there are many hotels in Haiphong but most of them are expensive in Vietnamese standard and their reviews are quite bad. After doing a little research, we have chosen to stay at Hoang Hai Hotel. Our review of the hotel can be found below.
We booked the Superior Double Room which included breakfast. The room was quite nice with a private bathroom, air conditioning, mini-bar and seating area.
The bed was okay, nothing special.
The bathroom was clean.
However, the room we got was quite noisy. Not only we could hear cars passing on the nearby street (that’s understandable as we were in Vietnam), but also were bothered by the noise within hotel as our room was close to the elevator. If you’re a light sleeper, make sure to ask for the room not facing the street and in a distance from the elevator.
Hoang Hai Hotel has a private restaurant with complimentary breakfast buffets every morning. There are few options of food that is made to order such as “Pho”, Vietnamese noodle or omelet. Made to order breakfast at Hoang Hai Hotel was really good and they gave us a large portion.
However, other food served for breakfast here such as spring rolls, fried vegetables, sausages were way too cold.
Location of Hoang Hai Hotel
The location of Hoang Hai Hotel is excellent. The hotel is centrally located and it takes about 20 minutes to get there from Cat Bi Airport (HPH). We took a taxi from the airport to Hoang Hai Hotel and it cost us 100,000 VND. Taking a taxi is just one of the ways for getting from Haiphong Airport into the city.
Hoang Hai Hotel is located within a walking distance from the town square, park, coffee shops and bars. The taxi fare from the hotel to the ferry port for Cat Ba Island is only about 30,000 VND.
Hoang Hai Hotel was one of the most expensive hotels during our trip in Vietnam as normally you can find better hotels for lower price in other Vietnamese cities and islands. This hotel in Haiphong was a bit pricier than we would have normally paid for a stopover in Vietnam.

Hoang Hai Hotel’s staff was nice and helpful. The receptionist working in the morning shift offered to call a cab to the ferry port for us. The girls working in the restaurant during breakfast were also very attentive and frequently came to check and clean our table.
Our Rate: 8/10
For us Hoang Hai Hotel was really okay for one night and good for our transition to Cat Ba island.
